Emma MacKean is a British artist based in London, working primarily in watercolour. Her paintings explore landscape, memory, and the emotional connections people form with particular places. Often inspired by coastal environments and rural landscapes encountered during travel, her work captures the atmosphere and quiet beauty of a location.

Emma studied Fine Art & History of Art at University, graduating in 2019. Since then, she has created a number of bespoke commissions for private clients, often painting landscapes connected to significant personal moments or meaningful places in people’s lives. These projects have become a defining part of her practice, and she has become known for translating personal memories of landscapes into expressive watercolour paintings. While commissions remain an important part of her work, Emma is now expanding her artistic practice to include original works, allowing her to further explore the landscapes and environments that inspire her.

Inspiration & Philosophy

Emma’s work is inspired by landscapes that carry both visual beauty and emotional significance, particularly places where water, sky, and land meet. Her paintings aim to capture the character of a place while conveying a sense of calm, inviting viewers to pause, reflect, and reconnect with landscapes that hold meaning.

She builds each landscape through small areas of colour and mark making. Up close, the individual sections of paint appear as distinct blocks and textures, yet as the viewer steps back these elements come together to form a cohesive and immersive landscape seeking to balance accuracy with vitality.

At the heart of Emma’s practice is storytelling and a desire to build a relationship with the natural world. Painting offers a form of quiet escapism; while working she often listens to music or audiobooks, immersing herself in stories as she paints her own interpretation of the landscape before her. In this way, the act of painting becomes a dialogue between narrative and nature.

ABOUT

FAQ'S AND INFO

What is a giclée print?

A giclée print is a high-quality fine art reproduction of an original artwork. The term comes from the French word meaning “to spray,” referring to the way specialised printers apply microscopic droplets of ink to create extremely detailed images. Giclée prints are produced using archival pigment inks and high-quality paper, allowing the colours, textures, and subtle details of the original watercolour to be reproduced as faithfully as possible. This process results in an extremely high-quality print with exceptional colour depth and longevity.
